my period was set to start around about tuesday, which would have been very convenient, since the bulk of my bleeding would be over by this weekend, when geoff and i will be going backpacking in the high sierras. however, it is now friday and i have yet to start bleeding, which means either i am pregnant or i will be bleeding heavily in the middle of the wilderness where i have to pack out all of my trash, neither of which possibilities are very pleasant to think about. are bears interested in bloody tampons? i do NOT want to have to put them in the bear container with our food! grumble.

edit: i finally started bleeding this afternoon. sigh.

Are you on the pill by chance? if so, don't skip your sugar pills. I'm doing this for BM.

I have heard that bears have a liking for the menstrual blood. I agree that putting used tampons in with the food is kinda gross...I would suggest double or triple ziploc bagging them. Overnight, just bury it 200 ft or so away from your camp (with a marker so you can find it again in the morning). I have known women to abort their trips entirely for fear of bear attraction. :\ Good luck either way!

Yes. I've heard that it's best to wrap them in plastic bags along with crushed aspirin (it's supposed to stifle the smell). You can probably put them in with the rest of your trash and hang it all from a tree at night if you want to keep them out of the bear canister.

Good luck, and have fun backpacking!

this article is a bit scary:
http://zebra.biol.sc.edu/smell/ann/myth3.html
but i guess it depends upon what types of bears you might be near? this article on polar bears seems to discount the black bear interest

the suggestion here sounds more reasonable:
http://www.campinggal.com/women-periods.html
(it's what i would do)

when i was learning to hunt as a kid, i was taught that if you encounter a bear you do not run or panic but stand very still b/c they don't usually attack humans unless they feel cornered.

have you discovered that you can reduce cramps? i learned that if i eat lots of red meat around the time of my period and cut or lower caffeine, i can have cramp-free periods. i talked to a vegetarian at one point, and she said broccoli does that for her. we think it's the iron or protein content? so maybe it might be good to pack along stuff that's high in iron or protein to make it less uncomfortable?

and this article is scary as hell

Funny that your comments on LJ are called "tasty morsels".

What weekdays are you free for flying? And did you want day, sunset or night?
