If you're near Hilo, there's a place called the Dolphin Bay Hotel (or something like that) that seemed to be a good value. The place was clean and comfortable and they had little kitchen things.
On the Kona, there's lots of places to stay. We stayed both at the Seaside and the King Kamehameha. The King Kamehameha was more expensive but no better than the Seaside.
You must see the lava if it's flowing. That was amazing. We stayed at the volcano lodge, which was expensive, but it was worth it to be close to the lava. (Since the best time to see it is at night, it's nice to only have a short drive to your hotel after visiting it.)
