anyway, the pdp shows were good. having my knees hate me is really annoying. i had expected that being mostly acoustic, these shows might sound a bit more like old pdp rather than the heavily electronica influenced current sound, but instead frank just relied on his decks. last night's show seemed a bit more housy and a little more upbeat, while tonight's was more chill. i think this was mostly just because of how the set list was rearranged. the set was really awfully downtempo as a whole though. god's gallipoli was pretty much the only real dance tune on the bill. even the other housy stuff was really chill. and a lot of the new stuff is rather ambient apparently. some of it kinda reminded me of boards of canada. at any rate, the shows were fun. i enjoy the current incarnation of pdp, but... i got to thinking about how i miss the older sound. it makes me really sad that i'll never ever be able to hear another show like the one at slim's 6 years ago when they had just moved to chicago and started getting into house and were excited about it but still had much of the austin sound. i just remember how amazing i thought that concert was, and i wish i could've gone to all three nights and soaked up as much of it as possible, fleeting moments... of course people grow and evolve and can't be frozen in time, but i do sometimes wish i could go back just for a taste. musing, hm, i wonder what spending the day in the shirt that you wore would sound like if they did it now.
went to see poi dog pondering at slim's last night with geordan and
then again tonight with lamont. last wednesday lamont mentioned
he was going to see rusted root at the fillmore and i was like hey
i liked what you played for me of theirs a lot i wanna go to that.
so i ended up going and meeting up with lamont, john, alicia and
anca, and then diana (sans dtodd though he was supposed to have
showed up later, dunno if he did or not). it was a pretty fun show,
but really the few songs that i'd heard of theirs that i thought
were great were the best songs they had and i wasn't overly impressed
with the rest. anyway lamont asked me how i thought the rusted root
show compared with poi dog pondering, because i had mentioned before
that they kinda reminded me of pdp, and i said i preferred pdp and
suggested he see them, so he said he was game for sunday.
