I'm really beginning to think that the government should grant only civil unions. "Marriage" should be something churches do. You could be married but not civilly united, and vice versa. All people, gay or straight, get equal protection under the law. Rabid zealots can have their gay-free marriages and more enlightened churches can marry whom they please.

this is exactly what i've been thinking lately as well. the whole problem really stems from the religous entanglements of "marriage"... and government shouldn't be involved in religious institutions! the government should really just issue civil union licenses with no reference to gender and leave the "marriage" business up to religion.
