Testing insulin is hard; testing glucose is easy.

Walmart sells an inexpensive meter and has, by far, the least expensive test strips I've seen (eighteen cents each vs. over a dollar for many brand names). (The walmart brand to look for is Reli-On Prime.) Also interesting is getting an A1C test--which you can also buy at walmart (though I'm not sure I trust it).
