I'm right there with you. I also hit the 170 mark, was feeling really crappy about my body, and ended up joining a gym a couple of weeks ago. You might find this article entitled "Fat Burning During Exercise: Can Ergogenics Change the Balance?" helpful in understand exactly how you can make your body start metabolising fat. It also shows that you gotta eat enough carbs so that you have enough glucose in your blood so that you can do your cardio longer so that you can burn more fat.
Over the past two weeks, I limited myself to a smallish sandwich for lunch, no soda or juice at lunch, light dinners, and deprived myself of all those little snacks that I didn't even realize I ate until I stopped eating them. I went to the spin classes at the gym. I got back on the Stairmaster again for the days I didn't do the spin classes, almost hands-free, letting each step dropped 8 in. before I stepped with the other foot to better mimick real stair-climbing and to work the appropriate muscles, and not quitting until I did 45 minutes no matter how much it hurt. I weighed myself again yesterday, after two weeks, and I was at 164. This exercise and diet stuff really works!
So good luck, and keep it up! You'll be at 150 in no time.
