i've been in quite a bit of denial about having to make some lifestyle changes in order to get my creeping weight under control. i've been holding onto the idea that my eating habits aren't bad, and i'm exercising a lot, so i shouldn't be getting fatter, but reality presents me with unmistakable evidence to the contrary. my pants and some shirts no longer fit me (i finally broke down and bought two new pairs of jeans and a skirt 2 weeks ago); my weight has now hit 170. i'm not sure why i've been gaining weight, if it's aging or if i can blame my meds, or if it's just drinking a bit more and eating out too often, but whatever the reason, it's time to shake the denial and get serious about taking some action.

i've renewed my pledge to cut back on alcohol and not drink during the week at all (except for very special occasions), i've contacted a personal trainer, and i've restarted my food journal. i will watch my portions, and i will eat more vegetables and protein and less cheese and carbs. i will step up my workouts from 2-3 times per week to 3-4.

this will have to be my number one priority for now. hard to work on other issues when i'm feeling so unhappy about the state of my body. ironically, i'm actually in pretty good shape now, since i've been exercising so much. i'm quite strong, and my cardio conditioning is much improved over the past year and a half. but i've become fatter as well, and i do not wish to carry around this extra roll of pudge that has appeared around my midsection.

tonight i went to the gym (cardio, abs, and the assisted pullup machine), did a load of laundry, and finished off the mixed lettuce and sliced chicken that i bought last week, with some chopped mushrooms and tasty dressing. that wasn't quite enough food for dinner, so i had a small quesadilla with taco sauce. not too bad.

and now, sleep.

I'm right there with you. I also hit the 170 mark, was feeling really crappy about my body, and ended up joining a gym a couple of weeks ago. You might find this article entitled "Fat Burning During Exercise: Can Ergogenics Change the Balance?" helpful in understand exactly how you can make your body start metabolising fat. It also shows that you gotta eat enough carbs so that you have enough glucose in your blood so that you can do your cardio longer so that you can burn more fat.

Over the past two weeks, I limited myself to a smallish sandwich for lunch, no soda or juice at lunch, light dinners, and deprived myself of all those little snacks that I didn't even realize I ate until I stopped eating them. I went to the spin classes at the gym. I got back on the Stairmaster again for the days I didn't do the spin classes, almost hands-free, letting each step dropped 8 in. before I stepped with the other foot to better mimick real stair-climbing and to work the appropriate muscles, and not quitting until I did 45 minutes no matter how much it hurt. I weighed myself again yesterday, after two weeks, and I was at 164. This exercise and diet stuff really works!

So good luck, and keep it up! You'll be at 150 in no time.
