planning a trip to hawaii for new years, woo! we're going to the big island, and i'm soliciting advice for where to stay, what to do, etc. so, cough it up if you have it!
edit: of particular interest to me are recommendations regarding which town to set up base in.

Date: 2004-12-05 12:20 am (UTC)From:On the Kona, there's lots of places to stay. We stayed both at the Seaside and the King Kamehameha. The King Kamehameha was more expensive but no better than the Seaside.
You must see the lava if it's flowing. That was amazing. We stayed at the volcano lodge, which was expensive, but it was worth it to be close to the lava. (Since the best time to see it is at night, it's nice to only have a short drive to your hotel after visiting it.)

Gordon Morse, the owner, is a VERY smart old man, a volcanologist. He can tell you stooooories... mention you're a friend of one of Rick Hazlett's students from Pomona College and ask him about the volcanoes.
Plus, their breakfast RULES!!
As for other places to visit.. I recommend visiting the south side of the island, particularly, if you can find it, the green sand beach at the south south end. It's beautiful, with a great view.
