i walked over to the cafe at my place of work, in search of lunchlike items. as i approached the patio and lily pond, i smelled and saw smoke. upon investigating, i discovered that someone had dropped a cigarette, and a patch of the bark mulch they spread on the landscaping was smoldering. actually, there were some flames at the end of the smoldering area. i stomped the flames out and went to the reception desk to tell the receptionist that she should call facilities about it, then i proceeded to acquire lunch. upon returning to the patio, i spent my lunch watching people walk by the smoldering fire completely oblivious. i didn't see a single person stop to see what was burning, or even slow down to look around. the smoke would be hard not to notice visually or olfactorally, but nobody seemed to care. i was actually kind of hoping the fire would flare up. it was in an isolated area where it wouldn't cause much damage, and i was interested to see how big it would have to get before people would start taking notice. eventually a janitor came by with a bucket of water, and that was that.
