i have not attempted to address this issue with a doctor any time in the recent past. when i was an adolescent my mom tried to find out if there was a diagnosable problem, but nothing in particular was found. i think the only thing that's been noted is some periodic slight anemia, but i take multivitamins with iron and haven't been denied giving blood in many years, so i don't think that's really much of an issue, though perhaps enough to affect me when i'm on the tail end of my menses?
i've never had a regular sleep cycle and always seem to need to catch up on sleep when i haven't been getting enough. i know there is some debate over whether it's actually possible to "catch up" on sleep, but it certainly seems to apply to me. i need at least 9-10 hrs per night, and if i haven't been getting that, i will easily sleep 12 hrs or more on the weekend. i often wish i were one of those people who wakes up with the sun, but my body doesn't seem to care a bit about what the hell is going on outside...
I know that sleep apnea can cause people to sleep a long time and not wake up refreshed. I know a couple people who treat it with a sleep mask, and one person who had surgery for it. This is usually diagnosed with a sleep study.
I know that thyroid problems can result in fatigue, but I don't know if they can result in lots of sleeping. That's something where guidelines as to what should be treatable seem to have changed in recent years, and that can be checked by a blood test. (Though if you've seen a doctor in the last few years, they've probably checked that.)

Or, maybe you just need a lot of sleep.
