Metabolism is how quickly you convert food into energy *or* fat. Speed and speedy stuff short circuits appetite and release norepinephrine, which tells your fat cells to give up some energy. Non-speed metabolism boosters can make you gain weight. :)
Working out and gaining muscle is the best way to speed up calorie burning. I think everything else on the market is essentially an appetite-supressant, if they do anything at all.
heh, ok. obviously i don't know a lot about this stuff, but i'm doing the working out part, and you hear all kinds of stuff about supplements blah blah blah and who knows what's really in them or what they do... i know there aren't any real shortcuts, but i wonder if any of these things people take actually help with weight loss aside from the appetite suppression aspect. you know, is there anything i can take that's not bad for me that will somehow aid the process of burning fat and building muscle, aside from the obvious eating well and working out a lot?
All the stuff being advertised are herbal appetite supressants, as far as I know. If you read the ingedients it's stuff like Green Tea extract and other stimulents that aren't quite as intense as ephedra. Others are mood enhancers, with stuff in it like tyrosine and St. John's wort, which I suppose is supposed to help with comfort eating.
You know what made me lose weight? Sudafed. *laugh* but that's definitely speedy.
Now, if you really want to get into it, there's a whole nutritional subculture that insists that it's the liver that ultimatley controls the rate of fat-burning, and they sell lots of liver-cleansing supplements in that light. They also recommend eating more essential fats, like flaxseed oil, and borage oil and salmon and oatmeal and such. I'm with them on the "eat more omega3s" thing, but I have no clue if their healthy liver herbs are legit. Louise Gittleman is the ringleader of these memes. Google her. :)
yes, I'm being persnickety
